Chapter Ten

Ethan understood her emotional state. He was there not too long ago, holding everything back until he reached a tipping point when they handed him his uncle’s ashes. He brought the urn back to the house with several six packs of beer, then glared at the urn until he finally ranted and raged. As if his uncle heard him, could do anything about dying or wanted to be dead. No, Ben wanted Ethan to spread his ashes in some remote town in Rhode Island no one knew. But if he hadn’t given him this last task, he never would have met Addy.

Two days. Was that all it took to fall head over heels for someone? One cowboy-boot-step at a time. Could these emotions be wrapped around reliving his uncle’s death? It must be. When the shock wears off, in the light of day to be poetic, both of them would feel different about the events and possibly each other.

He kept stroking her back, damn glad he was here to help. If helping Addy meant holding her, fine. Laughing with her would be better. He closed his eyes and faced the truth he kept talking himself out of. Seeing that she cared for him would be the best.

Ethan and Addy stayed holding each other for a while. Just together, not saying anything until Always on My Mind reached his ears.

She pulled away. He hesitated letting her go.

“Thanks,” she whispered, and glanced at the phone’s display.

“No thanks are needed,” he said, and released her, his hand lingering on her waist.
